Take a closer look at the technical specifications behind Husqvarna Motorcycles’ extraordinary new travel motorcycle, the 2022 Norden 901 Adventure bike which is already arriving in the dealers.

When Enduro21 first saw the Norden 901 concept model at the EICMA International Motorcycle Show in Milan back in 2019 it was eye-catcher. It didn’t just stand out from the TE and TX off-road models on the Husqvarna stand but from everything else in the vast hall. It was clear from the start this bike was a side-step from the Adventure bike norms and to our eyes the 901 has both a futuristic and a retro look about it.

“Fast, fun, nimble and above all capable,” Husky are boasting the on and off-road skills of the 901 which claims 105/100 power and torque figures from the same parallel twin engine found in KTM’s mid-weight Adv models, spoked wheels and 21’ front tyre size as standard, smart braking and cornering ABS systems plus different power modes for on and off-road riding. It’s all there in a unique-looking package.

2022 Norden 901 technical highlights:

  • Chromium-molybdenum steel trellis frame with engine as stressed member
  • 889cc parallel-twin engine with 105hp peak power and 100Nm of torque
  • Adjustable WP APEX suspension with adjustable settings for street and off-road use (220mm + 215mm wheel travel front and rear)
  • Three selectable ride modes (Street, Rain, Offroad) and optional “Explorer” mode
  • Switchable cornering ABS with Offroad mode
  • Height adjustable, two-peice seat
  • Ride-by-wire throttle
  • Easy Shift function
  • Cornering-sensitive traction control allows for nine levels of adjustable rear wheel slip (in Explorer mode)
  • Power Assist Slipper Clutch (PASC)
  • Tubeless spoked wheels and Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tyres (21” front – 18” rear)
  • Integrated LED lights and fog lights
  • 19-litre fuel tank provides an extended range of up to 400km
  • TFT 5” display digital dashboard
  • Optional Connectivity Unit provides navigation, phone and music functions from a smartphone
  • Wide range of aftermarket accessories

Punching in the middle weight division

Husqvarna say the Norden 901 brings “a tough yet lightweight approach to the midclass adventure sector”. At a claimed 204kg (without fuel) weight it is competitive with the new breed mid-weight Adv bikes like Yamaha’s Tenere 700 (on the scales at a claimed 187kg without fuel).

Smooth and torquey engines are what this sector of the Adv market thrives on and the 899cc, 105hp parallel twin engine in the Norden 901 has the credentials. There’s a balancer shaft to minimise vibration and the engine is housed in a light steel trellis frame as a stressed member – which harks towards those Rally race bikes.

The WP APEX suspension is proven on the other Austrian-built Adventure models and has proved versatile in Enduro21 tests – comfortable settings on the street and a decent range for “spirited” off-road riding.

Adjustable seat height through 20mm, 252mm of ground clearance and the 21’’ front and 18’’ spoked wheels and sizes are all pointing in the right direction for dual sport use rather than simply a street-biased machine. Judging by all the promotional images of Lyndon Poskitt riding the 901 it does a lot more than just look the part.

The Norden 901’s braking system is backed up by switchable Bosch Cornering ABS with Street and Offroad modes which, again, we’ve tested extensively and been surprised by on more orange-coloured machines.

The electronics, including lean-angle sensitive ‘Cornering Motorcycle Traction Control’ (MTC), have different settings depending on terrain and rider abilities and are genuinely effective – Husky say they’ve paid particular attention to how it works off-road, though we have no more details on exactly what at this time.

There are three selectable ride modes as standard (Street, Rain, Offroad) and an optional Explorer mode to deal with every circumstance the rider might meet. An ‘Easy Shift’ function allows for clutchless gear changes up and down the six-speed gearbox while a ‘Power Assist Slipper Clutch’ (PASC) maintains rear wheel composure.
