First look: 2025 KTM 1390 Super Adventure R – big updates on the big ADV beast
KTM’s big boss Adventure model, the 1390 Super Adventure R, gets the more off-road focus with chassis, body and dashboard updates plus 50cc more and new “camshaft” engine technology for smoother low-speed riding and more top-end power.
“The KTM 1390 Super Adventure R sits at the top of the offroad Adventure food chain and obliterates all challengers”, KTM boldly claim. It’s hard to argue against the presence of it that’s for sure and with the latest version of the LC8 engine it is a beast of a bike by any measure.
For 2025, the KTM 1390 Super Adventure R – which stands alongside the more street S and Evo versions – has all-new bodywork, LED lighting, a shorter, more offroad-focused windshield, and more storage.
KTM has been busy under the hood too with an updated chassis which boasts increased frame stiffness, improved handling and stability – both of which back up the pretty bold direction of the PR images sent out here which are very off-road focused.
There’s also a stiffer and stronger crash bar – fitted as standard on the Super Adventure R and possibly more important if you want to ride it like this! (P.S. This is a handy video If you had been wondering what Sam Sunderland has been up to since retirement...)
The R model is distinguished by the conventional 48mm WP XPLOR split cartridge forks and WPs XPLOR Progressive Damping System (PDS) shock taking care of duties at the rear instead of the electronic-assist kit on its siblings. Again, it’s a better set-up for off-road and shows the R’s focus.
Bigger bore LC8
Engine displacement is increased from 1300 to 1350cc, producing a staggering 170hp @ 9500rpm and 145Nm @ 8000rpm, and featuring “all-new Camshift technology” which KTM say improves rideability at low rpm making for a smoother response on the trail.
What’s is Camshift?
The new Camshift technology on this model means variable-valve timing with two individual cam profiles. At higher revs, the inlet cams shift sideways, opening the valves longer and higher for more gas flow into the cylinder head. This “drastically increases performance”, they say, while in the lower revs the inlet cams have a reduced valve timing and lift for the above mentioned effect of being smoother and nicer to ride on the trails.
KTM say the result is a noticeably more rideable bike in both normal road conditions, off road and on faster, open roads.
New 8” vertical-mounted dash
The KTM 1390 Super Adventure R also receives KTM’s new premium electronics package: an all-new 8” vertical-mounted dashboard with “inductive technology” for easy operation.
The screen also features innovative anti-reflex, anti-fingerprint, and anti-glare coating which improves overall readability, as well giving riders access to new rider modes, built-in navigation, and connectivity features. There are also a range of Power Parts and accesories available.
KTM say the 2025 KTM 1390 Super Adventure R will be rolling off the Austrian production line in 2025…which seems to be their mantra at the moment. Quite when is not clear and with productions lines halted or at best reduced, this could be affected.
Prices to be confirmed.
