After almost 600 kilometres over two days of 40 degree temperatures, Tosha Schareina took victory in the Baja Spain Aragon, round four of the 2022 FIM Baja World Cup ahead of the factory Sherco riders Lorenzo Santolino and Rui Goncalves.

27-year-old Spaniard Tosha Schareina put himself in front of the vastly more experienced Dakar and FIM Rally-Raid World Championship riders to take victory at his third attempt in the 2022 Baja Spain after beating the Sherco TVS Rally riders, Lorenzo Santolino and Rui Gonçalves, in the main category while Ivan Cervantes and Joan Pedrero distribute the new Trail and Maxi-Trail categories for big bikes.

Riding for the newly created GASGAS Aspar Rally Team, with which he will run the next Dakar Rally 2023 in Saudi Arabia, took victory at Baja Aragon after dominating day one’s two timed sections, 220 and 180 kilometres through the dusty tracks and paths of the Teruel, Jiloca and Albarracín regions. He was again fastest in the 160km day two test to take his first victory in the Baja.

The Baja Aragon was typically Spanish race with technical sections and a diverse terrain but also many dry and dusty tracks which were easy to make mistakes on. Check out how it looked in the day one highlights...

The 27-year-old Spaniard Schareina was naturally happy with his first major Baja win on home soil: “Saturday, the day was long and complicated. I started behind Rui and ate dust for a long time but was finally able to get close enough to him to start first in the second stage. I was then able to ride at my own pace and gain a good lead for today.”

Still not 100% fit after a fall in training, Lorenzo Santolino took second place: “Saturday, it was very hot,” the former EnduroGP rider said. “The course was fast and relatively dangerous with a lot of stones, which damaged the tyres. So, I preferred to do a reasonable race and finish in a good position.”

Santolino’s Sherco TVS Racing team-mate Rui Gonçalves achieved the best time in the prologue on Friday but crashed on Saturday and injured his leg. The Portuguese rider managed to take the third step of the podium though ahead of the third Sherco rider, Harith Noah who was not alone in finding navigational problems along the way. In the Juniors, Neels Theric took the victory ahead of Konrad Dabrowski.

Cervantes and Pedrero share the wins in Trail and Maxi-Trail

This 2022 edition of the Baja Aragon saw new Trail and Maxi Trail categories and it was Ivan Cervantes on a specially prepared Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro who took victory in the Trail category (600-900 cc). Angel Bellmunt and Gregorio Lopez accompanied him on the podium.

The Maxi Trail class for motorcycles of more than 900cc saw another well-known Dakarian, Joan Pedrero take the win on a Harley Davidson Pan America.
