The 97th edition of the FIM International Six Day’s Enduro (ISDE) officially opened on Saturday night with the traditional opening ceremony and Team USA’s talisman Taylor Robert making his last tango at the historic event. 

Welcoming competitors from around the world to San Juan, Argentina there was a true carnival atmosphere as the various nationalities took to the stage. However, the loudest noise from the assembled crowd and the most colourful smoke bombs were reserved for the host nation Argentina.

As is tradition the home riders were the last to take to the stage in their official teams who will compete in the three main classes – World Trophy, Junior World Trophy and Women’s World Trophy.

All good things come to an end – Taylor Robert aiming to bow out in style

In amongst the South American celebrations, one rider was soaking up the atmosphere perhaps more than most, with this being the last time he will be part of the ISDE.

USA World Trophy team rider Taylor Robert announced his retirement from professional motorcycle racing ahead of the opening ceremony, calling time on what has been a long and hugely successful time in the saddle.

“I’m feeling a mix of emotions,” explained Taylor from the ceremony, “but I’m super happy to be here representing the USA. There’s a lot that goes on before the start of the event but it’s at the opening ceremony when you really start to feel like the race is about to get going. It’s so cool to be on stage with all your teammates, celebrating the start of this special event.

“I raced from 2012 through to 2021 every year on the USA World Trophy team, which has been awesome. The ISDE is my favourite event of the year and I have so many great memories. Unfortunately, I got hurt really badly last year but made my way back to where I’m feeling really good racing again.

“Like all good things, my career has to come to an end sometime, and I couldn’t think of a better event to end it at than the ISDE. I have so many great memories from over the years, it’s a tough event, but it’s so cool to be competing in a team, battling with the best riders in the world.

“I’d love to do well, to win would be incredible, but I really just want to do my best and enjoy the event. The terrain here is a lot like in Arizona where I live, so I’m looking forward to getting started. All of our teams are awesome, they’re all in a really good place. There’s always surprises during the ISDE, but I’m feeling good and looking forward to enjoying my final; six days.”
