After a series of set-backs the Africa Eco Race will go ahead on its original calendar dates in 2024 for its 15th edition from December 30, 2023 in Monaco to January 14, 2024 in Lac Rose after 12 competition stages.

12 stages following the tracks of the genuine African Dakar, three categories for motorcycles (450cc, + 450cc and multi-cylinder +650 cc), as well as the new amateur ‘Raid’ class (non-competitive) to enjoy a unique experience in the desert it all sounds like a rally just as it should be.

The race led by the legendary ex-driver Jean Louis Schlesser has a mission to “preserves the flavour of the authentic African Dakar at a reasonable price”. But they hit problems in recent years with obviously the pandemic then also local issues with borders, conflicts in some African countries, weather and a lack of competitors following all of the above.

But the organisers say they are fully back and have announced the official start of its 15th edition will once again be from Monaco, where the vehicles will embark for Nador, to later complete the genuine 12-stage route (plus a rest day). The route, designed by Josep Maria Servià and Fina Román, travels through Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal, where it will end on the shores of the mythical Pink Lake.

The Africa Eco Race 2023 programme:

December 29/30, 2023: verifications in Menton (France)

December 30: departure from Monaco.

December 31: embarkation in Séte.

January 2-14, 2024: 12 stages and one rest through Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal.

Three motorcycle categories and a new Raid experience

The Moto class is open to three categories: 450cc, more than 450cc and the one for motorcycles with more than one cylinder and 650cc, in which the Yamaha Ténéré World Raid team of Pol Tarrés and Alessandro Botturi have already confirmed their participation. Also, this year, the newcomers will compete for an Acerbis Best Rookie trophy.

This edition will also feature the increasingly popular non-competitive Raid category that makes it possible for its riders to discover the magic of this adventure ride that follows in the footsteps of the old Dakar, sharing bivouacs, experiences and anecdotes without the competition element.

In addition to motorcycles, the Africa Eco Race 2024 will also have the Auto categories (T1, T2 and Side by Side), in addition to the SSV Xtreme Race, Trucks and Classic, the latter for trucks and cars in two subcategories for 1970 vehicles until 1997 and from 1998 to 2007.

It’s a shame there is not a vintage class for motorcycles, although we always have the SandRaiders to enjoy the 'old rockers' in the Sahara desert.
